Jesus Christ and the Truth of His Teachings

Today, we gather to address a misconception that has found its way into some discussions: the notion that our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was a communist or a socialist. As we explore this topic, let us ground ourselves in the truth of Scripture and the timeless mission of our Lord, which transcends any earthly political or economic system. May our hearts and minds be open to His word as we seek clarity and guidance.

Christ’s Mission: Spiritual Salvation, Not Economic Reform

Jesus came into this world with a purpose far greater than establishing an economic order. His mission was to offer us spiritual salvation—to reconcile us with God, to break the chains of sin, and to open the door to eternal life. When Satan tempted Him in the wilderness, offering all the kingdoms of the world, Jesus responded with unwavering resolve: “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve” (Matthew 4:10). This moment reveals the heart of His ministry: a focus on the spiritual Kingdom of God, not the temporal systems of man. Our Savior called us to transform our hearts through faith, not to restructure society through political means.

The Call to Voluntary Charity

As Christians, we are indeed commanded to care for the poor, the widow, and the orphan. Yet, this call is rooted in voluntary charity, not in the forced redistribution of wealth championed by socialism or communism. Scripture teaches us in 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Our giving is an act of love—a joyful response to God’s grace—not a duty imposed by a government. This stands in stark contrast to systems that rely on coercion and state control, which strip away the personal freedom and responsibility that God has entrusted to us.

Upholding Individual Responsibility and Private Property

The Bible affirms the dignity of individual responsibility and the right to private property. The commandment “Thou shalt not steal” (Exodus 20:15) presupposes that what we own belongs to us by God’s design. Jesus Himself warned against the dangers of loving money, as we see in His teachings about the rich young ruler (Matthew 19:16-22), but He never advocated for the abolition of private ownership. Instead, He called us to be faithful stewards of what we have been given—to use our resources wisely and generously for His glory. Communism’s push for collective ownership undermines this biblical principle, replacing personal accountability with a system that denies the individual’s role before God.

Correcting Misinterpretations

Some point to the early church in Acts 2:44-45, where believers “had all things in common” and shared their possessions, as evidence that Jesus endorsed a form of communism. But let us be clear: this was a voluntary act of love among believers, not a state-enforced policy. It was a unique expression of unity in that moment, not a mandate for all Christians for all time. Furthermore, communism’s foundation in atheism directly contradicts our faith. A system that denies God and His moral law cannot align with the teachings of Christ, who proclaimed, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Our faith rests on the reality of God, not the rejection of Him.

Living Out the Gospel

In conclusion, dear friends, let us hold fast to the truth of Jesus’ teachings. He came to save our souls, not to redesign our economies. He calls us to give freely from our hearts, not under compulsion, and to take responsibility for the blessings we’ve received. As followers of Christ, we are to be a light in this world—cheerful givers, faithful stewards, and bold witnesses to the Gospel. Let us reject the distortions of His message and embrace the freedom and purpose He offers.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen us to live out these truths. Amen.
