Through Christ I Stand

As many of you know, I’m currently on dialysis and awaiting a kidney transplant. This journey requires me to attend dialysis three times a week, alongside a battery of tests that seem to come at me from all directions.

Today was particularly challenging. I traveled to Indianapolis for a specialized evaluation to determine if my bladder, which hasn’t functioned in over two years, can support a new kidney. I’ll spare you the graphic details, but imagine tubes inserted from every angle, fluids being pushed and pulled, and a level of discomfort where 'ouch' feels like a polite understatement. After all was said and done, I left with no clearer answers than when I arrived—the medical team was equally uncertain.

The tests suggest my bladder, long dormant, has shrunk significantly, now holding only a fraction of what it should. Yet, amidst the ordeal, the staff at IU Health were remarkably compassionate. They balanced the necessity of the tests with genuine care for my emotional and physical well-being. I did my best to maintain a positive outlook, though I confess a few 'shoot' and 'shucky darn' moments slipped out during what felt like a medieval torture session. The technician, however, radiated optimism, and I’m clinging to that as a hopeful sign of brighter days ahead."

Dear friends, when chronic illness casts its heavy shadow, as it does for those enduring the trials of dialysis or awaiting a transplant, it can feel as though the soul is tethered to a storm-tossed sea. Yet, in these moments of uncertainty and pain, we are never alone—God’s grace and patience envelop us like a quiet harbor. Scripture reminds us in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that His grace is sufficient, for His power is made perfect in our weakness. Each tube, each test, each sleepless night is not a sign of abandonment but an invitation to lean into the steadfast love of our Creator. God’s patience mirrors His promise—He does not grow weary of our struggles, nor does He tire of our cries. Like the potter with clay, He is patiently shaping us, teaching us resilience and trust, even when the body falters. When the path feels endless, His grace is the lamp at our feet, guiding us through the fog of illness. So, hold fast, beloved. Rest in His patience, for it is a wellspring of hope, and let His grace carry you through each trial, knowing that you are held in the palm of His eternal hand. Amen.
