God Hates It: What Proverbs 6:16-19 Reveals About God’s Heart for Our Generation
We are told “God is love” while conveniently forgetting that the same God is also holy and just, we need to hear the full counsel of Scripture. Proverbs 6:16-19 pulls no punches. It lists seven things the Lord hates—seven abominations that are detestable in His sight. This is not Old Testament harshness; this is the unchanging character of the God we serve.
Here is the passage again, straight from the Word:
“There are six things the Lord hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
a false witness who pours out lies,
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.” (Proverbs 6:16-19, NIV)
If you are a conservative Christian who still believes the Bible is the inerrant, authoritative Word of God, these verses are not optional reading. They are a divine warning and a call to holy living in an unholy age.
1. Haughty Eyes – The Sin of Looking Down
Pride is the root of every other sin. Haughty eyes look with contempt on others, whether it’s the “enlightened” academic scorning biblical Christianity or the churchgoer who quietly judges his brother over politics or worship style. In 2026, social media has turned pride into performance art. God still hates it. Proverbs 16:18 warns that “pride goes before destruction.” The antidote? The humility of Christ who “made himself nothing” (Philippians 2:7).
2. A Lying Tongue – Truth Is Non-Negotiable
Jesus called Satan “a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44). When we shade the truth, exaggerate for effect, or flat-out deceive, we align ourselves with the enemy. Today’s culture swims in lies—media spin, political promises, and even “white lies” we excuse in everyday life. Conservative Christians must be people of radical honesty. Our yes must be yes and our no must be no (Matthew 5:37). Nothing less honors the God who cannot lie (Titus 1:2).
3. Hands That Shed Innocent Blood – The Unborn Cry Out
This is not political; this is biblical. From the blood of Abel to the blood of the innocents in the womb, God hates the shedding of innocent life. Over six decades of legalized abortion in America have stained our nation. Proverbs 6:17 stands as a clear indictment. The same God who formed us in the womb (Psalm 139:13-16) will hold every nation accountable. We must continue to pray, vote, support pregnancy resource centers, and offer the gospel of forgiveness and healing to every woman who has chosen abortion and now carries regret.
4. A Heart That Devises Wicked Schemes
The scheming heart stays awake plotting revenge, financial shortcuts, or political manipulation. In our day it shows up in corporate greed, activist organizations that manufacture crises, and individuals who secretly undermine their own church or family. God searches every heart (Jeremiah 17:10). Nothing is hidden. The remedy is a heart renewed by the Holy Spirit that delights in obedience rather than evil.
5. Feet That Are Quick to Rush into Evil
Notice the urgency—“quick to rush.” Our culture celebrates instant outrage, instant gratification, and instant moral compromise. Social media rewards the swiftest hot take. Scripture calls us to the opposite: “swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” (James 1:19). Let our feet instead be “beautiful” because they carry the gospel of peace (Isaiah 52:7; Romans 10:15).
6. A False Witness Who Pours Out Lies
Perjury, deepfakes, character assassination, and courtroom lies all fall under this abomination. In an age of “fake news” on every side, Christians must refuse to participate. The ninth commandment still applies: “You shall not bear false witness” (Exodus 20:16). Our testimony—whether in court, at work, or on social media—must be pure.
7. A Person Who Stirs Up Conflict in the Community
The final and culminating sin: sowing discord among brothers. Church splits, family feuds, and online pile-ons are epidemic. Jesus prayed for unity (John 17:21), yet division is often celebrated as “standing for truth.” Biblical discernment is one thing; being a self-appointed divider is quite another. Ephesians 4:3 commands us to “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
Why This Matters for Conservative Christians Today
We are not called to be popular; we are called to be faithful. When the culture redefines marriage, celebrates what God calls sin, and pressures the church to conform, Proverbs 6:16-19 becomes a battle map. We must hate what God hates without hating people. We must love sinners enough to tell them the truth and offer them the Savior who died for every sin on this list—including ours.
Practical Steps for Holy Living
1. Daily self-examination using this list as a mirror.
2. Repent quickly and specifically when convicted.
3. Teach these truths to your children and grandchildren.
4. Support ministries that defend life, truth, and biblical unity.
5. Pray for revival that begins in the house of God.
The glorious news is that every sin on this list was nailed to the cross. The blood Jesus shed willingly covers every haughty eye, every lie, every scheme, and every act of division—if we will repent and trust Him. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
Will you join me in praying this prayer?
*Father, search our hearts. Forgive us where we have loved what You hate. Cleanse us by the blood of Jesus. Make us a people who hate sin, love truth, defend the innocent, and pursue unity in Your Church. For Your glory alone, Amen.*
