The Lord of the Little: What Jesus Can Do With Your Five Loaves and Two Fishes
Have you ever felt like what you have to offer God is simply not enough?
Too little time. Too little money. Too little talent. Too little faith.
In those moments, it’s easy to feel discouraged and tempted to say, “Lord, send the problem away.” But the Gospel of Mark shows us a powerful truth: Jesus is **the Lord of the Little**.
This beloved story of the feeding of the five thousand is more than a miracle — it’s a life-changing lesson for every believer who feels inadequate.
The Scripture (Mark 6:35-44, KJV)
“And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat. He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes. And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.”
The Problem: A Desert Place with Hungry People
The disciples looked at the situation logically. Late hour. Remote location. Massive crowd. Their solution? “Send them away.”
How often do we do the same? We see our failing marriage, struggling finances, small church, or weary body and conclude, “This situation is hopeless.” The disciples were staring at facts — but they forgot the Lord who stands above the facts.
Jesus’ Command: “Give Ye Them to Eat”
Instead of agreeing with their assessment, Jesus issues a shocking command: “You give them something to eat.”
This is where many Christians stumble. We want God to do everything while we do nothing. But Jesus often says, “Use what you have. I’ll supply the power.”
The Little We Have
When the disciples took inventory, they found only five loaves and two small fishes — a boy’s lunch. Nothing impressive. Barely enough for one person.
Yet Jesus never despises small beginnings. He didn’t ask for more. He simply said, “Bring it to Me.”
This is the heart of the message: **The Lord of the Little only needs your little.**
The Power of Blessing and Breaking
Jesus took the loaves, looked up to heaven, blessed them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to distribute.
Here is the divine pattern:
1. **Blessing** – Give it to God with thanksgiving.
2. **Breaking** – Surrender requires sacrifice and humility.
3. **Multiplication** – Only then does the miracle happen.
The more the bread was broken, the more it multiplied. Your little will never grow until it is placed in the hands of Jesus and willingly broken.
Abundance from Scarcity
Not only were all the people filled (likely 15,000–20,000 including women and children), but twelve baskets of fragments were left over — one for each doubting disciple.
Jesus doesn’t do “just enough.” He does exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20).
What This Means for You Today
Whether you are a busy parent, a small church pastor, a young believer with limited gifts, or someone going through financial hardship — this miracle is for you.
God is not waiting for you to become “big enough.” He wants to use what you already have.
- Your small act of kindness
- Your limited time in prayer and Bible study
- Your modest financial gift
- Your imperfect testimony
All of these can be multiplied when surrendered to the Lord of the Little.
Three Searching Questions
1. What is your “five loaves and two fishes” right now?
2. Are you willing to bring it to Jesus and let Him break it?
3. Will you trust Him to multiply it for His glory?
A Final Word
Dear believer, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). The Lord who multiplied loaves and fishes in a desert place is still performing miracles with surrendered lives today.
Bring Him your little. Watch Him do the impossible.
If you have never trusted Christ as your Saviour, today is the day. The same hands that broke the loaves were nailed to a cross for your sins. He died, was buried, and rose again the third day. Call upon Him now — He will save you!
