Jehovah-Jireh Theology: “The LORD Will Provide” – A Deep Biblical Study from Genesis 22:14*
Beloved brethren, in our study of genuine worship from Genesis 22 we stood with Abraham on Mount Moriah and watched him raise the knife in total surrender. At the very moment of ultimate obedience, God revealed one of the most powerful names in Scripture: **Jehovah-jireh**. This is not a prosperity slogan. This is not a magic formula. This is covenant theology born in the fire of testing—the first compound name of Jehovah ever recorded in the Bible.
This name was spoken only *after* Abraham had obeyed, after the altar was built, after the wood was laid, and after the knife was lifted. It is the reward of radical worship. Let us open our King James Bibles once more and drink deeply from this mountain of revelation.
The Exact Meaning and Moment
“And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen” (Genesis 22:14).
In Hebrew, **YHWH-Yireh** (יְהוָה יִרְאֶה). “Jehovah” is the eternal, self-existent God. “Yireh” comes from the root *ra’ah* – “to see.” When God sees in the context of covenant obedience, He does not just look—He *sees to it*. He provides. Abraham declared this name in the future tense: “The LORD *will* provide.” He spoke it while the ram was still hidden in the thicket. That is Jehovah-jireh faith.
Four Foundational Pillars of Jehovah-Jireh Theology
1. Jehovah-Jireh Is Revealed Only on the Other Side of Obedience
The provision did not come until Abraham had risen early, saddled the donkey, bound Isaac, and stretched forth his hand to slay his son. God’s supply is released at the altar, never in the waiting room. If you are still withholding your Isaac, do not expect to see Jehovah-jireh.
2. Jehovah-Jireh Means “The LORD Will See to It”
Abraham could say on the way up the mountain, “God will provide himself a lamb” (v. 8) because he knew the God who *sees* also *supplies*. True faith speaks the answer before the ram appears. This is not presumption; it is the confidence of a man who fears God more than he fears loss.
3. Jehovah-Jireh Points Straight to Calvary
The ram was offered “instead of his son” (v. 13). Here is substitutionary atonement in seed form. On this very mountain range (later called Mount Moriah, where the Temple stood—2 Chronicles 3:1), God would one day provide *Himself* the Lamb. Abraham’s words were prophetic: “God will provide *himself* a lamb.” Jehovah-jireh theology is Gospel theology. The cross is the ultimate Jehovah-jireh moment for all mankind.
4. “In the Mount of the LORD It Shall Be Seen” Is an Eternal Promise
God did not say “The LORD *did* provide.” He said “it *shall be seen*.” Every believer who climbs the mountain of testing will see Jehovah-jireh again and again. Philippians 4:19 is the New Testament fulfillment: “My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
Jehovah-Jireh for the Fundamentalist Believer Today
This promise is not for the casual Christian who wants blessings without the knife. It is for the remnant who:
- Leave home for the mission field with no visible support
- Tithe faithfully when the bills are overdue
- Refuse to compromise the King James Bible in a world of modern versions
- Stand alone for truth when family and friends walk away
Jehovah-jireh is not a guarantee of wealth or perfect health. Sometimes He provides the grace to endure the fire rather than escape it. But He always provides exactly what is needed for His glory and our eternal good.
A Final Word from the Altar
The same God who met Abraham on Moriah is calling you today. Whatever “Isaac” He has placed His finger on—lay it down. Declare with Abraham while the knife is still raised: “God will provide Himself a lamb.”
Then watch. In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
Let us pray:
O Jehovah-jireh, the God who sees and provides, we bring every Isaac to Your altar. We will not withhold. Search us, try us, and provide the Lamb we cannot provide ourselves. Reveal Your glory again in our trials, our needs, and our worship. In the name of Jesus Christ—the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world—Amen.
Go forth, dear saints. The God of Abraham is still Jehovah-jireh. Climb the mountain. Lift the knife in faith. The ram is already in the thicket.
