That Hour on Calvary: The Trial and the Cross

Grace, mercy, and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. If you are a conservative Christian who still holds the King James Bible as the final authority, who believes in the blood atonement, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection, and the soon return of the Lord, then these two chapters are the very heart of our faith.

We have followed our Saviour through “that last week” (John 12), “that last night” in the Upper Room (John 13-17). Now we arrive at **that hour on Calvary**—the hour for which He came into the world. John 18 and 19 record the arrest, the sham trials, the scourging, the crucifixion, and the triumphant cry “It is finished.” This is not religious sentiment; this is the gospel in its raw, blood-bought reality.

Let us open the infallible Word of God.

1. The Arrest and Betrayal – “I Am He” (John 18:1-11)

Jesus goes forth into the Garden of Gethsemane with His disciples. Judas arrives with a band of soldiers and officers. When Jesus declares, “I am he,” the entire company falls backward to the ground. Even in chains, the King of kings is sovereign. Peter draws a sword, but Jesus rebukes him: “Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?”

Conservative Christians, this is our example. In a world that hates the truth, we do not fight with carnal weapons. We submit to the Father’s will, knowing that the same Jesus who allowed Himself to be bound is the One who will one day loose every chain.

2. The Trials – Before Annas, Caiaphas, and Pilate (John 18:12-40)

Jesus is shuttled from Annas to Caiaphas to Pilate’s judgment hall. The religious leaders will not enter the Gentile court lest they be defiled for Passover—yet they are already defiled with murder in their hearts. Pilate asks the question that still echoes: “What is truth?” (John 18:38). He finds no fault in Jesus, yet he yields to the crowd and delivers the innocent Lamb to be crucified.

Brethren, here is the tragedy of compromise. Pilate knew the truth but loved the praise of men more. In our day many conservative churches face the same pressure: water down the gospel to avoid offense. May we never be Pilates who know the truth but refuse to stand for it.

3. The Crucifixion and Death – “It Is Finished” (John 19:1-37)

They scourge Him, crown Him with thorns, mock Him as “King of the Jews,” and nail Him to the cross between two thieves. Above His head is the inscription in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin: JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. The soldiers gamble for His seamless coat. Jesus sees His mother and commits her to John. Then, in the darkest moment, He cries, “It is finished” (John 19:30) and gives up the ghost.

This is the finished work of Calvary. The debt is paid. The veil is torn. The blood of the Lamb has been shed once for all. No more sacrifices. No more works. No more religion. Only faith in the crucified, risen Christ.

4. The Burial – The King in the Tomb (John 19:38-42)

Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus—secret disciples no longer—take the body, wrap it in linen with spices, and lay it in a new tomb. The King of glory rests in borrowed ground, but not for long.

My Question to Every Conservative Christian Today

John 18-19 is the reason we are conservative. We refuse to soften the offense of the cross. We refuse to replace the blood with psychology or the resurrection with social justice. The cross is our glory, our hope, and our message.

Have you personally trusted the finished work of Christ? If you have never been born again, today repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. If you are saved but your heart has grown cold toward the cross, come back to Calvary. Let the sight of the pierced hands and feet stir you to fresh devotion, holy living, and bold witness.

The same Jesus who said “It is finished” is coming again. Until then, we preach Christ crucified.

Let Us Pray

Heavenly Father, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we thank You for John 18 and 19—for the garden, the trials, the cross, and the cry “It is finished.” Thank You that the blood of the Lamb taketh away the sin of the world.

Lord, search every heart reading this post. If anyone is lost, save them by Thy grace. If any believer has drifted, draw them back to the foot of the cross. Fill us with gratitude and courage to stand unashamed for the old gospel in these last days.

We give You all the glory, all the honor, and all the praise. In the powerful name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Don’t leave this page unchanged. Behold the Lamb. Trust the finished work. Live for the One who died for you.

Go forth in the power of the resurrected Christ—washed in His blood, sealed by His Spirit, and waiting for His return.

*Share this post if the cross stirred your heart anew. The King who hung there is coming back.*
