Tax Day 2026: Why Conservative Christians Must Pay Their Taxes – Straight from the Bible
“Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.”
— Matthew 22:21 (KJV)
Fellow Bible-believing Christians, patriots, and defenders of the old-time faith—another April 15 has rolled around. Tax Day. For many of us who love limited government, fiscal responsibility, and constitutional liberty, it feels like a punch in the gut. We watch our hard-earned dollars funneled into bloated bureaucracies, ungodly programs, waste, fraud, and policies that mock the values we hold dear. Yet in the middle of the frustration, the Word of God speaks with crystal clarity. This is not a time for rebellion or creative accounting. It is a time to obey the Lord.
Today we open the Scriptures to see exactly why every conservative Christian has a biblical duty to pay their taxes—honestly, completely, and without grumbling.
1. Jesus Himself Commanded It – Even Under a Pagan Government
When the Pharisees tried to trap Him with a gotcha question about taxes, our Lord Jesus looked at a Roman coin and gave the answer that still settles the matter today: “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.”
Think about that for a moment. The “Caesar” in power was the brutal Roman Empire—taxing the Jewish people to fund idolatry, military conquest, and emperor worship. Yet Jesus did not call for a tax revolt. He did not wink at cheating the system. He said pay what you owe. Period.
If the Son of God could say that under Rome, then we who live in the freest nation on earth have no excuse. Conservative Christians are not called to be anarchists or tax evaders. We are called to be obedient witnesses.
2. The Apostle Paul Makes It Crystal Clear in Romans 13
Turn with me to Romans 13:1-7 (KJV). This passage was written while Nero was emperor—hardly a friend of Christians. Yet Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, thunders:
“Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God… For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due…”
Paul does not say “pay taxes only if the government is godly.” He does not say “pay only what you feel is fair.” He says pay tribute—taxes—because government is a God-ordained institution. Even when it is flawed, even when leaders misuse the money, the principle stands. God uses civil government to restrain evil, punish wrongdoing, and maintain order. When we refuse to pay, we rebel not just against the IRS, but against the Lord who placed them there.
3. Practical Obedience That Honors Christ in 2026
Paying taxes is not supporting every liberal spending spree. It is submitting to the authority God has allowed. Here is how conservative Christians live this out:
- **File honestly and on time.** No padded deductions. No offshore games. No “they’ll never catch me” attitude. Our testimony before a watching world must be blameless.
- **Use every legal deduction and credit available.** Wisdom is not the same as rebellion. The Bible commands us to be “wise as serpents and harmless as doves.”
- **Vote and advocate for lower taxes and limited government.** We can—and must—fight at the ballot box and in the public square for fiscal sanity. But while the law stands, we obey it.
- **Pray for those in authority** (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Pray that God would raise up leaders who fear Him and reduce the tax burden on families and churches.
Beloved, we are not citizens of this world first. We are citizens of Heaven. Our ultimate hope is not in lower tax brackets or a balanced budget amendment—though we pray for both. Our hope is in the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. Until then, we render unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar so that we may render unto God what belongs to God with a clear conscience.
Tax Day is not a day to dread if you are walking in obedience. It is one more opportunity to show a lost and dying world that conservative Christians actually believe the Book we carry. We submit to authority because we fear God more than we fear the government.
So as you sign that return this week, do it as unto the Lord. Pray over it. Thank God for the freedom we still enjoy. And keep fighting the good fight for righteousness in the public square—without ever compromising the plain command of Scripture.
**“We ought to obey God rather than men”** (Acts 5:29) applies to every area of life—including April 15. Let us obey Him fully.
To God be the glory—whether in plenty or in withholding. Stand firm, pay what you owe, and keep looking up. The King is coming.
