Enduring Post-Surgical Pain with Contentment
Primary Scripture: Philippians 4:11-13; 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound… I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” Post-surgical pain is often more intense and prolonged than the patient expected. Medication helps but rarely removes all discomfort. Sleep is fragmented. Simple movements become major efforts. In this state the flesh becomes irritable, demanding, and self-focused. The temptation is to believe that contentment is impossible until the pain is gone. Scripture teaches the opposite. Paul learned contentment. It was not automatic; it was learned through experience.
