Biblical Generosity: The Wisdom of God for His People
In an age of tax-deductible foundations, celebrity “giving” campaigns, and virtue-signaling social media posts, the word *philanthropy* has been hijacked by the world. But the Bible—specifically the book of Proverbs—reveals the true meaning of philanthropy: a heart of generous love for others that flows from the fear of the Lord. This is not optional charity for the “socially conscious.” This is commanded obedience for every Bible-believing Christian. The Proverbs are not suggestions from a distant philosopher; they are the inerrant, Spirit-breathed wisdom of the living God.
Let us open our preserved King James Bibles and hear what the Lord declares about true philanthropy.
“He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD” (Proverbs 19:17)
This single verse turns all worldly philanthropy upside down. When you give to the needy, you are not merely helping a fellow human—you are making a loan to the Creator Himself. And Scripture promises: “that which he hath given will he pay him again.” God is no man’s debtor. The conservative Christian understands this: every act of biblical generosity is an investment in eternity, repaid by the faithful hand of our unchanging God.
The Bountiful Soul Shall Be Made Fat (Proverbs 11:24-25)
“There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.”
Notice the divine paradox: the one who scatters (gives liberally) actually increases, while the hoarder ends in want. This is not “prosperity gospel” nonsense. This is the sovereign wisdom of God. The liberal soul—the generous, open-handed believer—is made “fat” with spiritual blessing. Fundamentalist Christians reject the selfish spirit of our day that clings to every dollar “just in case.” God’s Word calls us to scatter in faith.
A Bountiful Eye Shall Be Blessed (Proverbs 22:9)
“He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.”
It is not enough to give grudgingly or under pressure. God looks upon the *eye*—the attitude of the heart. A bountiful eye sees the need and responds cheerfully. This is the spirit of 2 Corinthians 9:7: “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” True philanthropy begins with the eyes of faith fixed on the glory of God.
He That Giveth to the Poor Shall Not Lack (Proverbs 28:27)
“He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.”
Here is both promise and warning. The generous giver shall not lack. But the one who deliberately looks away from the needy invites curses upon himself. In a conservative, Bible-believing church, we do not outsource our responsibility to government programs or distant charities. We are called to personal, local, Spirit-led generosity—supporting widows, orphans, missionaries, and the local assembly first (Galatians 6:10; 1 Timothy 5:8).
The Fear of the Lord and True Philanthropy
All of Proverbs rests upon the foundational truth of Proverbs 1:7: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.” Worldly philanthropy often springs from pride, guilt, or a desire for praise. Biblical philanthropy springs from reverent awe of a holy God who “remembered us in our low estate” (Psalm 136:23). We give because He first gave—His Son for our redemption (John 3:16).
Jesus Himself echoed Proverbs when He said, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40). Our giving to the poor is ultimately giving to Christ.
Practical Application for Today’s Faithful Believer
1. **Examine Your Heart.** Do you have a bountiful eye, or do you hide your eyes from need? Ask the Lord to search you (Psalm 139:23-24).
2. **Give Systematically and Cheerfully.** Support your local church, then missions, then the poor in your community. Let your giving be secret, as unto the Lord (Matthew 6:1-4).
3. **Teach Your Children.** Model Proverbs-style generosity in the home. Let them see you “lend unto the LORD” so they will fear God and walk in wisdom.
4. **Reject Worldly Imitations.** Celebrity foundations and government welfare cannot save souls or glorify God. Only biblical charity, rooted in the Gospel, does both.
5. **Trust the Promise.** When you give in obedience, God Himself becomes your Paymaster. He will supply every need according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19).
If you are reading this and have never trusted Christ as Saviour, true philanthropy begins at the cross. Repent of your sin and receive the greatest Gift ever given—the Lord Jesus Christ. Only then can your life become a channel of divine generosity.
Let us close in prayer:
Heavenly Father, Giver of every good and perfect gift, thank You for the wisdom of Proverbs that calls us to true philanthropy. Forgive us for selfish withholding and for hiding our eyes from the poor. Create in us bountiful hearts that scatter in faith. Make us cheerful givers who lend unto You with joy. Bless the work of our hands for Your glory and the furtherance of the Gospel. In the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
Go forth, beloved, and live out the philanthropy of Proverbs. Give with a bountiful eye. Fear the Lord. And watch the God who cannot be out-given pour out blessings upon you.
