God Hates Lying: A Sobering Warning from Proverbs 6 for Today’s Politicians
I woke up this morning with a burden on my heart for the politicians in this country. Now I know that may seem at cross purposes, so to speak, but as I was reading Proverbs 6:16–19, I realized it could be directed directly at the politicians of our day in this country. And the fact that, not once but twice, God mentions how much He hates a liar—I didn’t misspeak; the actual word used is “hate.” I know for many of us it’s hard to think that God hates anyone, especially some of you folks who think, “Oh, God is always love and He wouldn’t do anything to anyone.” This thought and fallacy has sent more people to hell than any other. God makes it very clear what is needed to enter heaven.
These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. (Proverbs 6:16-19, KJV)
Look closely, brothers and sisters. The God who breathed out these words does not merely “dislike” lying—He hates it. Twice in this short list the lying tongue and the false witness who pours out lies stand condemned as abominations. This is not the sentimental “God is love” version of Christianity that excuses sin. This is the holy, unchanging God of Scripture who cannot lie (Titus 1:2) and who calls His people to walk in truth.
Scripture is saturated with this same thunderous warning. “Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight” (Proverbs 12:22). Jesus pulled no punches: “Ye are of your father the devil… for he is a liar, and the father of it” (John 8:44). The Ten Commandments thunder, “Thou shalt not bear false witness” (Exodus 20:16). And the final book of the Bible draws the line in fire: “All liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone” (Revelation 21:8). No exceptions. No political exemptions.
Conservative Christians know the stakes. We believe the Bible is the inerrant Word of God. We understand that every soul will stand before the Judge of the living and the dead. That is why the habitual lying and stealing we see in so many of our elected officials today should cause every one of them—and us—to tremble.
Politicians who campaign on promises they never intend to keep, who twist facts to protect power, who craft legislation that enriches themselves while robbing the taxpayer—these are not minor policy disagreements. These are the very abominations listed in Proverbs 6. A lying tongue deceives voters. A false witness destroys trust. Hands that devise wicked schemes and feet swift to mischief often walk hand-in-hand with theft—whether it is padding budgets, funneling public money to cronies, or stealing the people’s liberty through deceit. They sow discord among brethren, pitting citizen against citizen. God sees it. God hates it. And God will judge it.
The modern lie that “God is only love and would never send anyone to hell” has already sent millions to destruction. Yes, God is love—but He is also holy. He offers forgiveness through the blood of Jesus Christ, but only to those who repent and turn from their sin. Unrepented lying is not a political tactic; it is a soul-destroying choice.
My fellow conservative believers, we are called to pray for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1-2), but we are also called to speak the truth in love and to refuse to wink at sin. Examine your own heart first—have you been truthful in small things? Then pray that our leaders would fear God more than they fear polls or party. Vote for men and women who love truth. And if you are a politician reading this, hear the Word of the Lord: repent today. Turn from the lying tongue and the false witness. The same God who hates your sin stands ready to save your soul through Jesus Christ.
The hour is late. The eternal destiny of souls hangs in the balance. Let us live—and vote—as those who believe every word of this Book.
