The Judgment Seat Of Christ

Scripture Focus: 2 Corinthians 5:10 (KJV)

> "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad."

There is a coming day that no blood-bought believer can escape. It is not the Great White Throne judgment reserved for the lost. It is the Judgment Seat of Christ — the Bema Seat — where every Christian will give an account for the life we lived in these mortal bodies.

The Apostle Paul writes with Spirit-inspired clarity: *we must all appear*. There will be no exceptions among the redeemed. This is not a judgment to determine our salvation. That question was forever settled at the cross when we trusted in the finished work of Jesus Christ. We are justified by faith alone. But our *works* — our service, our motives, our stewardship, and our faithfulness — will be examined in the blazing light of His holy presence.

Works Tested by Fire

The Bible is clear in 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 that our works will be tried by fire. Some will be revealed as **gold, silver, and precious stones** — eternal materials built in the power of the Spirit for the glory of God. These will survive the fire and bring reward. Others will be exposed as **wood, hay, and stubble** — the cheap building materials of selfish living, worldly compromise, and works done for human applause. These will be burned up, and the believer will suffer loss, “yet so as by fire.”

On that day the hidden things of the heart will be revealed (1 Corinthians 4:5). The real motives behind our service, our giving, our witness, and even our secret thoughts will be laid bare. How much of what we have called “ministry” or “Christian living” will prove to have been done for self rather than for Christ?

 A Motivation to Holy Living

This truth is not meant to terrify the believer but to **motivate** us. It should drive us to live with eternity in view. It should cause us to ask daily:

- Am I building with materials that will endure the fire?

- Am I using my time, talents, and treasure for the Kingdom or for this passing world?

- Am I walking in purity, knowing that even my thought life is open before Him?

- Am I faithfully using the spiritual gifts God has given me in my local church?

- Am I bold in my witness and generous in my stewardship?

The Judgment Seat of Christ strips away every self-deception and every excuse. As conservative, Bible-believing Christians who hold fast to the inerrant Word of God, we reject the cheap-grace teaching that says we can be saved and then live as we please. True faith produces a life of good works (Ephesians 2:10). We are called to be holy as He is holy (1 Peter 1:16).

Crowns and Eternal Reward

Scripture also holds out the promise of reward. Five crowns are mentioned for faithful believers:

- The Incorruptible Crown — for those who discipline the flesh (1 Corinthians 9:25)

- The Crown of Righteousness — for those who love His appearing (2 Timothy 4:8)

- The Crown of Life — for those who endure trials (James 1:12)

- The Crown of Glory — for faithful shepherds of God’s flock (1 Peter 5:4)

- The Crown of Rejoicing — for those who win souls (1 Thessalonians 2:19)

What joy it will be to cast those crowns at the feet of our Savior and say, “Worthy is the Lamb”! Yet how heartbreaking it will be for some to stand empty-handed, having lived for self and seen their works reduced to ashes.

 A Call to Examine Ourselves

Dear friend, the trumpet could sound at any moment. We could be caught up to meet the Lord in the air, and then we will stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ. Will we have confidence on that day, or will we be ashamed (1 John 2:28)?

Let us examine our lives honestly in the light of eternity. Let us repent of worldliness, carnality, and half-hearted service. Let us yield afresh to the Holy Spirit and commit ourselves to faithful, sacrificial living for the glory of God.

Live every day as if you are one step from the Bema Seat — because you are.

May the Lord find us faithful when we appear before Him.

To God alone be the glory!
