A Man Sent From God

Based on 1 Kings 17:1 (KJV)

“And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.”

In these days of deepening apostasy, when many churches have compromised with the world and the culture openly celebrates what God calls abomination, the account of Elijah the Tishbite shines like a beacon. God has always raised up men and women who would stand for Him when it was costly. Elijah’s sudden appearance before the most powerful and wicked king in Israel’s history gives us a timeless picture of what it truly means to be **a man sent from God**.

The Spiritual Darkness of Ahab’s Reign

King Ahab “did evil in the sight of the LORD above all that were before him” (1 Kings 16:30). His marriage to the wicked Jezebel imported the vile worship of Baal and Asherah into the northern kingdom on a national scale. Ahab built a temple for Baal in Samaria and erected an Asherah pole, doing more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than any king before him (1 Kings 16:32-33).

Israel had turned from the living God to idols that could neither see, hear, nor save. They had broken the covenant and violated the first and greatest commandment. Judgment was coming, and God chose an unlikely instrument to announce it.

 The Man God Chose

Elijah was a Tishbite from Gilead — a rugged, mountainous region east of the Jordan. We know almost nothing of his background or family. He was not from the priestly tribe, nor did he come from the royal court. He was a man of the wilderness whom God had prepared in obscurity.

His name itself was a testimony: *Eli-yahu* — “My God is Yahweh.” When he stepped into Ahab’s presence, he did not come with political power, an army, or popular support. He came with a word from the living God.

The Bold Declaration

Elijah’s message was direct and fearless:

“As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.”

Three powerful truths stand out:

- The Living God — Elijah swore by the LORD who *liveth*. Baal was lifeless. The true God is eternal, self-existent, and sovereign over every detail of creation, including the weather.

- Before Whom I Stand — This is the secret of Elijah’s authority. He had been standing in the presence of the King of kings. He was not speaking his own opinion or seeking applause. He was an ambassador from the throne room of heaven. His words carried the weight of divine counsel.

- The Certain Judgment — “There shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.” This was not a threat; it was a prophecy rooted in the covenant curses of Deuteronomy 28:23-24. Because Israel had forsaken the Lord and served other gods, the heavens would become as brass and the earth as iron.

The drought lasted three and a half years (James 5:17; Luke 4:25). It was not random misfortune — it was the direct, supernatural judgment of the living God upon idolatry.

God’s Word Never Fails

Elijah declared the drought “according to my word,” and it came to pass exactly. Later, when God’s time of judgment was complete, Elijah prayed on Mount Carmel and the rain returned in abundance (1 Kings 18:41-45). Not one syllable of the Lord’s word fell to the ground.

This is our confidence today: “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away” (Matthew 24:35). The same God who controlled the rain in Elijah’s day still reigns in 2026. He is not intimidated by wicked rulers, false religions, or cultural pressure.

Timeless Lessons for Fundamentalist Christians

1. **God still raises up His messengers in dark times.** When the church grows cold and the culture hardens, the Lord sends voices to call His people back to Himself. We need modern Elijahs — men who will not bow to the Baals of our age (entertainment, sensuality, materialism, or doctrinal compromise). Pray for them. Support them. Be one where God has placed you.

2. **True spiritual authority comes from standing before God.** “Before whom I stand” was the source of Elijah’s boldness. How much time do we spend in the presence of God — in prayer, in the inerrant Word, in holy obedience? The man or woman who has been with Jesus will speak with a power the world cannot manufacture or silence (Acts 4:13).

3. **Sin has real consequences, yet mercy is still offered.** The drought was severe, but its purpose was redemptive — to expose the fraud of Baal and turn hearts back to the living God. Today the gospel call remains the same: “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19). Christ has already borne the full judgment we deserved. All who trust in His finished work alone are saved by grace through faith.

4. **God provides for those He sends.** Elijah was sustained by ravens at the brook Cherith and later by a Gentile widow in Zarephath. The Lord who calls His servants also supplies their needs. Whether in physical trials, financial pressure, or spiritual opposition, our God is faithful.

Will You Be a Man or Woman Sent from God?

The question is personal: Are *you* standing before God? Are you willing to speak His truth without compromise, even if it costs popularity, position, or comfort?

Not every believer will confront a king, but every child of God is called to be a witness (Acts 1:8). In your home, workplace, community, and local church, will you declare the whole counsel of God with holy boldness?

The days are evil. The time is short. The harvest is still plenteous, but the laborers are few. May the Lord of the harvest send forth laborers who, like Elijah, can say with all their heart:

“As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand…”

Let us seek His face. Let us hide His Word in our hearts. Let us pray without ceasing. And let us go forth in the power of the Holy Ghost, proclaiming the unsearchable riches of Christ to a lost and dying world.

Even so, come, Lord Jesus!
