Geritol, Diapers, and The Word of God: Finding Renewed Faith in God's Promises

At a time where youth is idolized and age is often seen as a burden, it's easy to feel like life has left us behind. We turn to supplements like Geritol to chase a fleeting sense of vitality, or we marvel at the fresh energy of newborns bundled in diapers. But what if I told you that the Bible offers a profound lesson on renewal that bridges these two ends of life? Drawing from Romans 4:18-25, let's explore how Abraham's story of impossible faith can ignite our own trust in God's unchanging Word.

The Story of Abraham: Hope Against Hope

Abraham, the father of our faith, wasn't exactly in his prime when God made His extraordinary promise. At nearly 100 years old, his body was "as good as dead," as Romans 4:19 bluntly puts it. Sarah, his wife, was barren and well past childbearing years. If this were today, Abraham might be popping Geritol pills just to keep up with daily chores, while Sarah wondered if her dreams of motherhood were forever dashed.

Yet, in Romans 4:18, we read: "In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, according to what was said, 'So shall your offspring be.'" This wasn't blind optimism; it was faith rooted in God's spoken Word. Genesis 17 and 18 capture the human side—Abraham and Sarah both laughed at the absurdity. "After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?" Sarah mused (Genesis 18:12). Their reaction reminds us that doubt is natural, but God's promises transcend our limitations.

Paul emphasizes in Romans 4:20-21 that Abraham "did not weaken in faith" but "grew strong" by glorifying God, fully convinced of His power. No medical interventions or modern miracles—just the raw authority of Scripture bringing life from death.

From Geritol to Diapers: The Miracle of New Life

Imagine the scene: after years of waiting, Isaac arrives. Diapers in the tent of a centenarian! Cries echoing through the camp, a tangible sign of God's faithfulness. This wasn't just a personal victory; it foreshadowed God's redemptive plan for humanity. As Romans 4:23-25 explains, Abraham's righteousness by faith wasn't for him alone but for us: "It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification."

Ephesians 2:1-5 echoes this, reminding us we were "dead in the trespasses and sins" before Christ quickened us. Our spiritual barrenness is no match for the gospel's power. In a culture that chases eternal youth through fleeting trends, conservative Christians like us know better. We anchor in Scripture's timeless truth, not society's shifting sands. Hebrews 11:11 praises Sarah's faith: "By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive... since she considered him faithful who had promised."

Applying This to Our Lives Today

For those in our congregation feeling the weight of years—perhaps battling health issues, family strains, or spiritual dryness—Abraham's story is a call to renewal. Isaiah 40:31 assures: "But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles." Don't rely on worldly fixes; immerse in God's Word for true vitality.

And for the younger among us, or those new to faith, embrace the "diaper" phase—the fresh starts baptism symbolizes. Dying to sin and rising in Christ brings endless possibility. In a world promoting self-reliance, let's uphold justification by faith alone, as the Reformers did, standing firm on sola scriptura.

A Final Prayer and Challenge

Heavenly Father, as You strengthened Abraham and Sarah, renew our faith today. Help us trust Your promises amid impossibility, glorifying You in weakness. Through Jesus Christ, Amen.

Dear readers, reflect on your own "Geritol moments." How can you lean on God's Word for a "diaper miracle"? Share in the comments below, and let's encourage one another in biblical truth.
