3: The Mystery of Lawlessness and the Failure of Man’s Solutions
Scripture warns that “the mystery of lawlessness is already at work” (2 Thessalonians 2:7). That mystery is not confined to some future Antichrist; it is the spirit of rebellion against God’s order that has been active since the Fall and is intensifying in our day. The riots across Europe are one more visible manifestation of that lawlessness. When large numbers of people decide that the rules of civil society no longer apply to them—when they burn public buildings, loot stores, and attack police—they are acting out the same spirit that rejects the authority of God Himself.
Jesus predicted that nation would rise against nation and that lawlessness would increase (Matthew 24:7, 12). The economic pressures, housing crises, and government failures that sparked the protests are real. Yet the Bible never presents human government as the ultimate solution. Romans 13 teaches that governing authorities are God’s servants to punish evil and praise good, but those authorities themselves are made up of fallen people. When the fear of God departs, even the best-intentioned policies collapse under the weight of human sin. More spending, new leaders, or stronger police powers cannot cure a heart that loves pleasure more than God.
This is why the Christian must not place ultimate hope in any political movement, economic plan, or social reform. Those things may restrain evil for a time, but they cannot remove it. Only the gospel can do that. The same Paul who wrote about the mystery of lawlessness also wrote that the gospel is “the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16). While the streets burn, the church is called to proclaim the only message that can change the lawless heart.
At the same time, believers are not called to abandon the public square or to pretend that order does not matter. We pray for our leaders (1 Timothy 2:1–2), we submit to lawful authority (Romans 13:1), and we work for justice and peace where we can (Micah 6:8; Romans 12:18). But we do so with open eyes, knowing that every human solution is temporary and that the final answer to lawlessness is the return of the Lord Jesus Christ, who will put all enemies under His feet.
Call to Action: Read 2 Thessalonians 2:1–12 and Romans 13 this week. Thank God for the restraining work of the Holy Spirit and of civil government. Pray that the gospel would restrain lawlessness in the hearts of many. And refuse to put your ultimate trust in any man or party.
