Day 2: Night Visions of Comfort and Restoration

 


Zechariah 1:7–2:13

Three months after the opening call, on the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, Zechariah received a series of night visions that form the heart of chapters 1–6. The first three visions establish God’s heart toward His people and His city.

In the first vision Zechariah sees a man riding a red horse among myrtle trees in a bottom (1:8). Behind him stand red, speckled, and white horses. These are the Lord’s patrol, sent to walk to and fro through the earth. They report that the whole earth sits still and is at rest. The angel of the Lord then intercedes: “O Lord of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years?” (1:12). The Lord’s answer is full of comfort: “I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy… I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it… and the Lord shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem” (1:14–17).

The second vision shows four horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem, followed by four carpenters (craftsmen) who come to fray and cast out those horns (1:18–21). God Himself will raise up instruments of judgment against the nations that oppressed His people.

The third vision presents a man with a measuring line going forth to measure Jerusalem (2:1–2). The young man is told that Jerusalem will be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle. The Lord Himself will be a wall of fire round about her and the glory in the midst of her (2:4–5). Then comes the thrilling command: “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the Lord” (2:10). Many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day and shall be His people.

These visions are not vague encouragement. They are the sovereign declaration of the covenant-keeping God. He is jealous for Zion. He will rebuild. He will dwell among His people. He will draw the nations. For the conservative Christian, these promises find their ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who is Immanuel—God with us—and who will one day return to reign from a restored Jerusalem. Until that day, the same God who walked among the myrtle trees walks among His church. He is still jealous for His people. He is still building His house. He is still the wall of fire around those who fear Him.

Take heart, believer. The nations may rage, the culture may mock, but the Lord of hosts has returned to Zion with mercies. Lift up your eyes. The measuring line is still in His hand, and His glory will fill the earth.
