Day 3: Cleansed for Service – Joshua the High Priest and the Branch

 


Zechariah 3

The fourth vision brings us into the heavenly courtroom. Joshua the high priest stands before the angel of the Lord, and Satan stands at his right hand to resist him (3:1). Joshua is clothed with filthy garments—symbol of the sin and defilement of the priesthood and the people. The Lord rebukes Satan: “The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?” (3:2).

Then the command is given: “Take away the filthy garments from him.” To Joshua the Lord says, “Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment” (3:4). A fair mitre is set upon his head. The high priest is cleansed and restored to service.

Yet the vision does not end with Joshua. The Lord of hosts declares, “Hear now, O Joshua the high priest… for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the Branch… For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day” (3:8–9).

Here the Messianic hope shines with brilliant clarity. The Branch is the coming Davidic King, the righteous Shoot from the stem of Jesse (cf. Isaiah 11:1; Jeremiah 23:5). The stone with seven eyes points to the all-seeing, perfect foundation stone—Christ Himself. And the removal of iniquity “in one day” finds its fulfillment at the cross, where the Lamb of God took away the sin of the world.

Conservative Christians must never grow weary of this truth. Our standing before God rests not on our own garments of righteousness, which are filthy rags, but on the perfect righteousness of the Branch who was made sin for us. Like Joshua, we are brands plucked from the fire. Like Joshua, we are clothed in clean garments. And like Joshua, we are called to walk in the Lord’s ways and keep His charge (3:7).

Satan still stands to accuse the brethren. But the same Lord who rebuked him in Zechariah’s vision still intercedes for us. The Branch has come. The stone has been laid. Iniquity has been removed in one day—at Calvary. Walk therefore in the clean garments He has given you, and serve Him with holy fear and gladness.
