Why Christians Must Not Deal with the Paranormal or Supernatural



We are living in an hour of great spiritual deception. Television, streaming platforms, social media, and even some so-called “Christian” bookstores are filled with content that glamorizes the paranormal. Ghost-hunting programs, psychic mediums, astrology, tarot cards, crystals, spirit guides, and “conversations with the dead” are presented as entertainment, self-help, or harmless curiosity. Yet the unchanging Word of God issues a clear, repeated, and severe prohibition against every form of the occult and paranormal. This is not a matter of personal preference or cultural sensitivity. It is a matter of obedience to the living God and protection of the soul.


God’s Explicit Command


In Deuteronomy 18:10-12 the Lord declares:


“There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you.”


Notice the language. God does not call these practices “unwise,” “risky,” or “best avoided.” He calls them an *abomination*. The same word used for the most detestable sins in the Old Testament is applied to divination, sorcery, mediums, and consulting the dead. Leviticus 19:31 adds, “Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God.” And Leviticus 20:6 warns that the one who turns to mediums and necromancers will be cut off from among God’s people.


These are not cultural relics of ancient Israel. The moral law of God regarding the occult has never been repealed. The New Testament continues the same absolute stance. Galatians 5:19-21 lists “sorcery” (the Greek word *pharmakeia*, which includes occult practices and witchcraft) among the works of the flesh. Those who practice such things “will not inherit the kingdom of God.”


Why the Prohibition Is So Strong


The reason is simple and terrifying: every supernatural power that does not proceed from the Holy Spirit proceeds from the kingdom of darkness. Ephesians 6:12 tells us plainly that our warfare is “against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” When a person seeks information from the dead, invites “spirit guides,” or toys with occult objects, they are not contacting deceased loved ones or benevolent angels. They are opening a door to demons who deliberately disguise themselves as helpful or familiar spirits (2 Corinthians 11:14).


Isaiah 8:19-20 confronts the issue head-on: “And when they say to you, ‘Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,’ should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living? To the teaching and to the testimony!” The only safe source of supernatural knowledge and power is the living God speaking through His written Word and by His Holy Spirit. Everything else is counterfeit.


King Saul’s tragic end in 1 Samuel 28 stands as a permanent warning to the church. After the Lord refused to answer him by dreams, Urim, or prophets, Saul sought out the medium at Endor. He knew the practice was forbidden—he himself had previously expelled the mediums from the land—yet he pressed forward in desperation. The result was judgment and death the very next day. God had already spoken. Saul’s decision to consult the dead was open rebellion.


 Modern Excuses and Biblical Answers


Many today say, “I’m only watching for entertainment.” Scripture answers that the heart is not neutral. What we feed our minds shapes our affections and dulls our spiritual discernment. Others claim, “I’m just curious about the spiritual realm.” Curiosity about forbidden things is how the serpent first approached Eve in the garden. Still others insist, “I only want to speak with my departed loved one.” The Bible is clear: the dead do not return to communicate with the living (Luke 16:19-31; Ecclesiastes 9:5-6). Any “communication” that appears to come from the dead is a demonic impersonation.


Some even attempt to “Christianize” these practices—claiming to use tarot cards “for Jesus” or to contact angels through occult methods. This is spiritual adultery. The Lord Jesus Christ does not share His people with the kingdom of darkness. “What fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial?” (2 Corinthians 6:14-15).


The Only Safe Supernatural Power


The Christian is not left without supernatural reality. We have the indwelling Holy Spirit, the living Christ, the completed canon of Scripture, and the privilege of prayer. We are commanded to “test the spirits” (1 John 4:1) by the standard of God’s Word. True spiritual power is seen in the fruit of the Spirit, in bold gospel preaching, in answered prayer according to the will of God, and in victory over sin—not in séances, orbs, or psychic impressions.


Colossians 2:15 declares that Christ has already “disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.” The believer does not need to investigate the enemy’s territory. We stand in the finished victory of the cross.


A Call to Separation and Repentance


If you have dabbled in any form of the paranormal—horoscopes, psychic readings, ghost apps, ouija boards, crystals used for spiritual purposes, or “Christian” versions of the same—repent immediately. Renounce every occult practice. Destroy any related objects in your possession (Acts 19:19). Close the door through confession and the blood of Jesus Christ. The same Lord who forbids these things also freely forgives and cleanses all who come to Him in genuine repentance.


Church of the living God, let us be a people who tremble at His Word. Let us refuse every counterfeit spiritual experience and cling only to the pure, sufficient, and glorious revelation given to us in Scripture and by the Holy Spirit. The supernatural world is real. Only one side of it belongs to the children of God—and that side is found exclusively in the Lord Jesus Christ.


Stay in the Word. Stay in prayer. Stay under the blood. And keep yourselves from idols.
