Abraham: Called Out When the Destination Was Not Named

 


"By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went." — Hebrews 11:8

Genesis 12 is the schoolhouse of guided faith. “Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee.” The command was clear. The map was not. God named the leaving before He named the coordinates.

He often gives enough light for obedience, not enough light for control. Abraham had a promise, an altar, and a tent. He did not have a completed itinerary. Faith does not require omniscience. Faith requires a trustworthy Speaker. If you must see the whole road before you will take the first step, you are not asking for guidance. You are asking to stop needing it.

Guidance demanded separation — country, kindred, father’s house. Some paths cannot be walked while you remain entangled with the old life or the approval of people who do not fear God. Luke 14:26–27 is the same call in the mouth of Christ. Guidance will test your loves.

Abraham also stumbled, and the Holy Ghost does not hide it. Egypt. The lie about Sarah. Hagar. Guided people are not flawless people. They keep returning to the Word God has spoken. The covenant held because God held it. That is good news for every believer who has already made an Ishmael. The Lord still leads such a man. He does not bless the shortcut.

Romans 4 says Abraham staggered not at the promise through unbelief. Hebrews 11 says he sojourned as in a strange country, looking for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. The guided life is a pilgrim life. If you need this present world to feel like home before you will obey, you will not obey for long.

If you belong to Christ, you are Abraham’s spiritual seed (Galatians 3:29). The same God still calls men out. The call may not be geographic. It may be the leaving of a sin, a company, a lie, or a future you had already furnished in your mind.

Today: Read Genesis 12:1–9 and Hebrews 11:8–19. Write down what God has already said, and what you are demanding to know before you will move. Then ask which list belongs to a pilgrim.
