God Still Guides His People

"I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye." — Psalm 32:8

Beloved brother or sister in Christ, the first truth we must settle is this: the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob has not gone silent. He has not retired from the care of His flock. He has not left His redeemed children to wander by chance, by personality type, or by the latest method for “finding your purpose.” The same Lord who led Israel by a pillar of cloud and fire still directs those who belong to His Son.

Fundamental Christianity rests upon the character of God before it ever rests upon a technique. He is sovereign. He is personal. He is faithful. Because He is sovereign, nothing in your path is accidental, and no enemy of your soul is unsupervised. Because He is personal, He deals with you as a Father, not as a distant force. Because He is faithful, His promises of guidance are covenant words spoken by a God who cannot lie.

Psalm 32 is a psalm of confession and restoration. David has been silent in his sin, and the Lord’s hand has been heavy upon him. Then he acknowledges his transgression, and immediately the language of guidance appears. That order matters. God does not first hand a wandering saint a five-year plan. He first brings him back under mercy. Guidance is a family privilege. It belongs to those who have been forgiven and who are walking in the light.

Many in our generation treat guidance as a feeling to be chased or a sign to be manufactured. Scripture presents something far sturdier. God guides a people He has already purchased. “For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls” (1 Peter 2:25). If you have been born again through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ, you are not an orphan seeking a map. You are a sheep under the Good Shepherd. He calleth His own sheep by name and leadeth them out, and they follow Him, for they know His voice (John 10:3–4).

That voice is not a rival to the Bible. The church hears the living Christ through the written Word He has given, applied by the Spirit He has sent, in the body He has formed. Over these fourteen days we will walk through those means. The aim is not novelty. The aim is obedience.

Begin here. Are you seeking His direction so that you may follow it, or so that He may rubber-stamp a path you have already chosen? “The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way” (Psalm 25:9). Meekness is the willingness to be told no. Isaiah 58:11 promises that the Lord shall guide thee continually — not only when the decision is large enough to impress other people. The ordinary Tuesday belongs to Him.

If you are not in Christ, do not treat this series as a set of tools. You do not yet have the Shepherd. “Ye must be born again.” Repent. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, who died for our sins according to the Scriptures, was buried, and rose again the third day. Then the Guide Himself will be yours.

Today: Read Psalm 32 aloud. Thank God that He has promised not merely to inform you, but to instruct you and to watch over the way with His eye.
