The Word of God: The Lamp for Every Step

 


"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." — Psalm 119:105

If you want to know how God guides His people, start where He has spoken most clearly. He has not left His will locked in impressions, dreams, or the tone of a preacher’s voice. He has given a Book.

Scripture is inspired, inerrant, and sufficient. Second Timothy 3:16–17 declares that all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. That includes walking in the will of God. If the Scriptures thoroughly furnish you, you do not need a second Bible whispered into your feelings.

Many sincere people wait for a voice while neglecting the Voice already written. God will never lead you to do what His Word forbids, and He will never lead you to neglect what His Word commands. Before you ask whether to take a job, marry a person, move to a city, or join a church, ask whether the decision honors the plain teaching of Scripture. A marriage that yokes a believer with an unbeliever is not a hard call requiring a fleece. It is settled in 2 Corinthians 6:14. A church that denies the gospel is not a “leading.” It is a warning.

The lamp is for your feet — the next step — and for your path — the longer course. You do not need a secret code for every fork in the road. You need a life soaked in Holy Writ. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11). Hidden Word produces guided feet.

Beware treating the Bible as a fortune-telling device, flipping pages at random for a “word.” That is superstition in religious clothes. The devil quoted Scripture to the Lord Jesus in the wilderness. Isolated phrases, ripped from context, can be made to bless almost any desire. Read contextually. Read whole books. Then obey what is clear.

Much of what people call “waiting on God for direction” is delay in the face of already-revealed duty. You do not need special guidance to tell the truth, flee fornication, gather with the saints, honor your parents, provide for your house, or preach the gospel. “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification” (1 Thessalonians 4:3). If you will not walk in the light you have, do not be surprised when the next step seems dark.

Psalm 19 says the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. Isaiah 8:20 remains the test: “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” If a supposed leading contradicts the Bible, it is not from the Holy Ghost. God is not double-minded. His Spirit authored the Word; His Spirit will not overthrow it.

Today: Read Psalm 119:97–112. Write down one command you already know and have been postponing. Then set a plan to read Scripture as a disciple, not as a miner looking only for a verse to justify yesterday’s desire.
