The Holy Spirit Never Contradicts the Scriptures He Inspired

 


"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth." — John 16:13

Every true child of God is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. “If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his” (Romans 8:9). “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14). This is precious. It is also one of the most abused sentences in the modern church.

The Spirit of truth guides into truth. He does not authorize a divorce Scripture forbids, a scheme the Word condemns, a partnership with darkness in the name of ministry, or a departure from a sound church because the preaching has begun to meddle. The same Spirit who moved holy men to write Scripture (2 Peter 1:21) will not now whisper a different gospel. God is not at war with Himself.

His leading is bound to Christ and to the apostolic Word. He shall glorify the Son (John 16:14). He shall bring to remembrance what Christ has spoken (John 14:26). He produces the fruit of Galatians 5:22–23. He convicts of sin, righteousness, and judgment. A leading that leaves you proud, careless of sin, impatient with the local church, or hungry for spiritual celebrity is not His leading, no matter how warm it felt.

There is a quiet inner work by which the Spirit applies Scripture to the conscience and strengthens obedience. That is real. Illumination is not inspiration. The Spirit does not write new verses. He opens the verses already written (1 Corinthians 2:12–14).

What is not biblical is treating every strong feeling as a prophecy. “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God” (1 John 4:1). The test is not intensity. The test is truth.

Some have been taught to follow “the still small voice” as if 1 Kings 19 were a method for daily decisions. The Lord was confronting a fleeing prophet, not handing Elijah a technique. If you want to hear the Spirit, open the Book He wrote.

Ephesians 5:18 commands us to be filled with the Spirit. The parallel in Colossians 3:16 commands us to let the word of Christ dwell in us richly. Those are not two spiritualities. A Spirit-filled church is a Word-filled church. Separate them and you will have dead formality or living error.

Today: Read Romans 8:1–17 and John 16:7–15. Ask to be made sensitive to Scripture and suspicious of any voice that would edit it. Then obey the last clear thing He has already said.
