When the House and Senate Changes Hands: Trusting the One Who Rules Over Nations
Yesterday’s election results are in, and the U.S. House of Representatives and the US Senate have been returned to Democratic control. Whether we wanted that outcome or not, it is the reality before us. Many Christians woke up this morning feeling discouraged, frustrated, or even fearful about what this means for the country we love. If that describes you, take a moment and breathe. God is not surprised by these results, and His plans have not been derailed.
Scripture reminds us that “He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others” (Daniel 2:21). The same God who raised up Pharaoh, Cyrus, and Caesar still sits on the throne today. No election, no party, and no chamber of Congress operates outside His sovereign hand. Romans 13:1 tells us that governing authorities exist because God has established them. That truth does not require us to celebrate every policy or every leader, but it does call us to rest in the fact that nothing happens apart from His permission and purpose.
Our hope has never been secure when it rests primarily in which party holds the gavel. When we place too much weight on political outcomes, we set ourselves up for repeated cycles of elation and despair. The kingdom of God does not advance or retreat based on the balance of power in Washington. Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36). Our citizenship is in heaven, and our marching orders remain the same regardless of who controls the House: love God, love our neighbor, proclaim the gospel, and live as salt and light.
This does not mean we become passive or indifferent. We continue to pray for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1-2), speak truth with grace, and engage as faithful citizens. But we do so from a place of settled confidence rather than anxiety. Psalm 46:1-2 declares, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.” If the earth itself can shake and God remains unmoved, then a change in congressional leadership cannot shake the foundation of our faith.
Perhaps the Lord is using this moment to refine our trust. Maybe He is reminding us that our greatest battles are not fought primarily at the ballot box but in the prayer closet, in our homes, in our churches, and in the everyday opportunities we have to point people to Christ. The early church thrived under emperors who were openly hostile to the faith. They did not win because the political winds favored them; they won because they kept their eyes on the risen Lord and their hands to the plow of obedience.
So take heart today. The control of Congress may have changed hands, but the throne of heaven has not. The One who holds the stars in place and numbers the hairs on your head is still working all things together for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). Rest in that. Pray without ceasing. Keep preaching the cross. And remember that our ultimate victory is already secured in Christ, no matter which party occupies the Speaker’s chair.
In His sovereign grip
