Day 5: The Flying Scroll and the Woman in the Ephah – Judgment on Sin

 


Zechariah 5

The sixth and seventh visions shift the tone from comfort to cleansing judgment. Zechariah first sees a flying scroll, twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide—the exact dimensions of the holy place in the tabernacle and the porch of Solomon’s temple (5:1–2). This is the curse that goes forth over the face of the whole earth. On one side it is written against every thief; on the other against every one who swears falsely by the Lord’s name. The scroll enters the house of the sinner and consumes it, with the timber and the stones (5:3–4).

God’s Word is not only a word of comfort; it is a word of judgment. The same holy standard that once rested in the sanctuary now flies forth as a curse against unrepentant sin. Theft and false swearing—sins against both neighbor and God—are singled out, yet they represent the whole of covenant-breaking wickedness.

The seventh vision is even more vivid. An ephah (a large measuring basket) appears, and a woman sits in the midst of it. The angel says, “This is wickedness.” A lead cover is thrown over the mouth of the ephah, and two women with wings like a stork lift it up and carry it to the land of Shinar (Babylon), where a house is built for it (5:5–11). Wickedness is personified, contained, and removed from the land of God’s people to the place of ultimate exile and judgment.

These visions remind the conservative Christian that God is not indifferent to sin among His people. The rebuilding of the temple and the restoration of the nation require the removal of wickedness. Holiness still matters. The flying scroll still goes forth. The God who cleansed Joshua’s garments will not allow unrepented sin to remain in the midst of His people forever.

Yet even in judgment there is mercy. The wickedness is carried away. A place is prepared for it outside the camp, so to speak. The same God who judges also provides the way of cleansing through the blood of the Branch. Let every believer examine himself. Let every church refuse to tolerate the sins God has already judged. The scroll is still flying. The ephah is still being carried away. Walk in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost.
