Moses: Forty Years of Transformation – Learning Meekness in the Wilderness

 

Moses’ life is divided by the Spirit of God into three distinct forty-year periods, each requiring a complete adaptation of identity, purpose, and dependence. Forty years as a prince in Egypt. Forty years as a shepherd in Midian. Forty years as the deliverer and lawgiver of Israel. At each transition the familiar was stripped away and a new man was required.

Acts 7:22-23 tells us that Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was mighty in words and in deeds. Yet when he attempted to deliver his people in the energy of the flesh, he failed, killed an Egyptian, and fled. The next forty years were spent on the backside of the desert, keeping the flock of his father-in-law. The man who once moved in royal courts now moved among sheep. The man who once spoke with authority now lived in obscurity.

God was not wasting time. He was producing meekness. Numbers 12:3 records the result: “Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.” True adaptation under the hand of God always produces humility, never self-assertion. The wilderness was the classroom where self-reliance died and dependence upon the I AM was born.

When the burning bush appeared, Moses had already been emptied of Egyptian confidence. His first responses were objections rooted in a new awareness of his own insufficiency. God answered every objection with the same reality: “Certainly I will be with thee.” Adaptation for Moses was not the recovery of former strength. It was the reception of divine presence in place of human ability.

Even after the Exodus the pattern continued. The people murmured. Moses interceded. The people rebelled. Moses fell on his face. At Meribah he struck the rock in frustration and was barred from the land. Even the final adaptation—accepting that he would only see the inheritance from the mountain top—was met with quiet obedience. Deuteronomy 34 shows him dying at the word of the Lord, still the servant of God.

Beloved, many of the Lord’s people are living in their own Midian. The former usefulness seems gone. The present season feels barren and long. Do not despise the wilderness. The same God who used forty years to produce the meekest man on earth is able to use your present obscurity to strip you of self and clothe you with His own sufficiency. Adaptation is not the recovery of the old life. It is the death of the old life so that the power of Christ may rest upon you.

Wait for the bush to burn. When it does, go forward in the strength of the I AM alone. Amen.
